What is Mental Health?

It is the well-being of emotional state, socially & psychologically. It is very important for a person to be mentally healthy. 

Mental health of a person can change over time. It is a result of long & short-term adverse experiences. On an average at least 50% of the people face mental health issues at least once in their life.

According to World Health Organization “Mental Health is not only the lack of mental disorder or disabilities; it is way more than that”.

Types of Mental Health Disorders

Anxiety – It is the most common of all. It may be without any trigger and symptoms specific to it are fatigue, tension, muscle tense, restlessness. 

Mood – It is sudden change of mood. Its advanced stage might be bipolar disorder. 

Schizophrenia – It is a complex condition. Usually, the patient will have disjoined thoughts. And will find it difficult to process the thoughts.

Causes

It usually is a result of trauma, some adverse life experiences. Sometimes it is a result of bad parenting. Few other reasons may be:-

  • Intoxication & Drugs
  • Isolation
  • Social issues
  • Financial issues
  • Prolonged Medical conditions

Who are at risk?

Nearly everyone is at risk. It may start as early as age 4-5 and may affect elderly people as well. As such it is usually along with other medical conditions.

Symptoms. Usually the symptoms are: – 

  • Hopelessness
  • Confusion
  • Negative emotions
  • Stress eating.
  • ADS (Alcohol Dependency Syndrome)
  • Violence 
  • Withdrawal from public activities

Treatment. The treatment is usually very individualistic. What will work for me would not work for you.  Apart from the use of medicines, it includes regular counselling. The writer recommends that an authentic & established counsellor may be approached. He will help the patient to identify the correct cause and then recommend best available medication and counselling. 

Medications. Usually what is prescribed is medications with counselling. Medications may include antidepressants, anxiolytic & antipsychotics.

The medications work on the fact that they aid the body to absorb the good feeling chemicals. 

How to keep up your Mental health.

  • Practice self-care (like work from home)
  • Regular yoga
  • Meditation
  • Pursue hobbies
  • Keep in contact with people who make you feel good.
  • Regular exercise. 
  • Travel
  • Do relaxing work and activities
  • Be socially active
  • Be open to interactions
  • Walk
  • Sometimes listening to music may help
